Inspiration from my Dad who passed away from Liver Cancer in 2019

Remember Your Goals

I still remember to this day, my dad’s voice telling me this as I got ready for school one morning. As a young teenager I rolled my eyes and rushed out the door to catch the bus. A couple of days passed and my dad woke me up for school again. He took me by the hand, led me to my bathroom mirror, and he had taped a sticky note to the mirror that said, “remember your goals”. He said, “Sis, every time you look at yourself in the mirror, I want you to look at this note and know you are worthy and capable of anything you set your mind too!” My Dad worked in the coal mines most of his career with calloused hands and had a masculine physique. Looking at him, you wouldn’t imagine, but his heart was even bigger than him. He always instilled in me to believe in myself, work hard, and never stop reaching for the stars.

Now that my Dad has passed on, that same sticky note is still taped to my old bathroom mirror. From time to time I go in there, place my hand on the old sticky note, and it brings back so many good memories to mind. Sometimes we forget just how capable of doing what we set our mind too. I know I am guilty of that. There are seasons in life when it’s busy, noisy, and full of distractions. Our hearts may begin to drift from the goals we once set.

But when we forget our “why”, scripture gently reminds us why we started and how to finish the race.

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV

Our goals as believers is to become more like Christ in this world that is measured by success or accomplishments to be compared to others. When my mind is troubled and I loose sight of what is truly important in life, I know I can seek the Lord for renewed focus and strength.

Take a moment today to pause and pray:

“Dear Lord, help me to remember my goals today for Your honor and for Your glory, Lord. When I feel weak, unmotivated, or distracted, Lord set my sights on You. Lord help me remember my purpose that You have called me for. Align my goals with Your will, and give me the endurance to keep going. Lord I thank You, for everything big and small in my life. Thank You, Lord for this day!”

Set your sights on things of above. Keep your eyes on Jesus!
